The day that you are born, people say that destiny was already written for you. I find this to be a full admittance that you can’t do anything. If everything was already laid out in a plan, destiny was done, then YOU could actually change nothing.
I believe quite the opposite, that the future is a land of infinite different possibilities. And that what you do right now could make a huge difference for one person or for many.
I’ve written about my very close friend Jovanny whose life was taken away 3 weeks after brutally after receiving Electric Shock, he was in his early 20s. If events like that don’t make people stand up, I don’t know what will.
But even before then, I came to a moment when I was deciding my path of what to do in life. I attended an event at the Church of Scientology in Miami as I was reading the book Dianetics to improve myself personally. At that event I was read a shocking statistic that roughly 50% of college students will get into illegal drugs. And while the number was staggering, it hit me home because in my circle of “gifted” friends was more like 85% were already on drugs and some much harder drugs than pot (I was placed in gifted classes after I was examined for IQ in middle school).
I saw that I had a path to take. To stay in the same group of people where all of my close friends were already drug users, and one of them was dealing — or to be part of a group that was actually educating people on the dangers of the drugs and providing solutions to fix your life so you’d never have to resort to drugs.
So I decided to not go to college, and instead go to volunteer with the Church as a staff member. At the time, I did NOT know how much that decision would actually help me in business later, how much good discipline I would learn, and what it was like to work selflessly and put in volunteer work would make me stand out not only in the work force, but even more importantly give me a much better chance in business.
There’s a famous quote which really sums up why I give to the Church: “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” truthfully there are SO MANY more great people than there are people are specialize in harm. But what we’re missing is more people taking action, right now and doing something. When I talk to Scientologists who are doing something about it, like Raul Arias or Darren Tessitore and know that the campaigns and changes they are doing are funded by the Church, and they volunteer their time… I know that I can make a difference by donating.
I know several people who work at the International Scientology Dissemination & Distribution Center who are largely volunteers, and know that the cost to print a booklet with information that helps a person never take drugs in their life is SO LOW, because we share a purpose together to achieve the Aims of Scientology. I know that giving something now can make a difference I may never fully understand.
This is why I’ve dedicated to tithe to the Church and related programs, so to give 10% of my income. If I can give 35%+ of my income to the government, even though they currently fund Electric Shock Therapy, then how could I not give at least 10% to a worthy cause?
