“It all comes up to postulates in the end.

“The fellow has agreed that his space is only observable when some other thing, namely the MEST universe, has created it and that his barriers are there because of the MEST universe. 

“In other words, he’s agreed to fix his determination in such a way as to agree with what he finds in front of him determining it. Which, of course, is a surrender of self-determinism. And when we get to this point we find immediately that the fellow runs out of the ability to create.

“Now, the best there is in Man is the creation of beauty. That’s the best there is in Man. And that’s the best there is in the spirit and we can see this. …

“If all he can see are the barriers of the MEST universe and his attention is entirely fixed upon them, and his attention at the same time is dispersed from his own universe and dispersed from his own creative abilities by many distractions of attention, we are basically down to a problem of fixed and unfixed attention. What we’re trying to do is unfix the attention of the preclear.”
