A good majority of Scientologists do NOT smoke marijuana. Is it prohibited? Well, yes and no. For sure you cannot smoke INSIDE any Church, you’d be kicked out for sure in a second. However, if you regularly smoke and want to find solutions at the Church, you will be welcome with open arms. There’s an official website for the Church of Scientology of Tampa that says all street drugs and psychiatric mind-altering drugs are forbidden. The way that I see it, definitely no single person in the church will recommend that you take a psychiatric drug or a street drug, BUT also you won’t be shunned for life just because you smoke.
There is long-standing church policy that you cannot actively participate in Scientology auditing (counseling) while taking any drug that impairs your thinking (including alcohol). I know of a few people who stopped smoking for 2 weeks to participate in auditing. Some then go back to it and some do not.
One big piece about the REASON Scientologists do not regularly smoke, is that there are many parts of the Bridge to Total Freedom that addresses WHY people started taking drugs in the first place – was it a break up, a loss of a family member or a friend, the loss of a job, a toxic relationship, etc…
There is also a lot that the Church offers to get off of drugs, including the free online course Answers to Drugs, which can assist people to come off of drugs with a vitamin program that reduced withdrawals. The Church is dedicated to HELPING people that may be taking drugs to help them overcome the addiction, as well as finding the reason they started using in the first place.
If you’re currently smoking and want to see what Scientology is all about, you’ll need to stop smoking in order to experience auditing correctly, and then see if you like the way that you are after not using for a few weeks.
With so many Scientologists dedicated to eradicating the negative impact of drugs, for sure most Scientologists do not take drugs, but MANY are former users, who are now rehabilitated.
