When you meet Ashly Guernaccini today, you see a picture of success: a prominent attorney, founder of At Cause Law in Clearwater, Florida, a dedicated wife, and a mother. Her law firm focuses on protecting people’s wealth and dignity. Yet behind her impressive legal reputation lies an astonishing story of personal recovery that defies overwhelming odds. Ashly is a recovered opiate addict who overcame a class of drug addiction that carries a recovery rate of less than 5%. Her journey from rock bottom, through the Narconon rehabilitation program, Scientology, and ultimately building a thriving legal practice offers an inspiring story of resilience.
The Pressure to Perform and the Descent into Dependency
Raised in Steubenville, Ohio, Ashly grew up in a loving, supportive family. A high school valedictorian and cheerleader who graduated a year early, she never drank alcohol or touched drugs during her teenage years. However, enrolling at the University of Pittsburgh at a young age stripped away her familiar structure. Searching for philosophical answers and open to new experiences, she began experimenting with hallucinogenics like mushrooms and LSD, and later cocaine.
Her drug use escalated dramatically during law school. By the time she was preparing for the bar exam, she had developed a severe heroin dependency. “I was so addicted to drugs, at the point I was actually doing drugs in the bathroom during the exam,” Ashly recalls. Miraculously, she passed the exam. Yet, her personal life was rapidly spinning out of control as the exhausting cycle of chasing an elusive high took over.
The Trap of Medical Interventions and Hitting Rock Bottom
In an effort to break free from illegal street drugs, Ashly sought help through medical professionals, hoping to replace illegal substances with socially acceptable prescriptions. Instead, she was funneled into psychiatric medications. The emotional numbness and side effects were severe. Describing her experience on Paxil, Ashly notes, “If I could describe it, it was as if any desire I had to do anything, any drive, anything, was just gone”. The medications left her feeling like a “zombie,” sensing that “pieces of me dying essentially”.
Realizing the psychiatric route was not working, Ashly reverted back to street drugs, progressing from snorting heroin to injecting it. At the time, she was working in criminal defense, representing major drug dealers. Eventually, her double life caught up with her. In a dramatic parking lot arrest, undercover officers tackled her to the concrete. Facing criminal charges and the imminent loss of her law license, Ashly hit rock bottom. “I completely lost faith that I could do this,” she reflects.
The Turning Point at Narconon
Desperate to save her daughter, Ashly’s mother searched frantically online for a holistic rehabilitation program that avoided the “powerless” narrative of traditional 12-step models. She discovered Narconon, a drug-free rehabilitation program utilizing a specialized sauna regimen, niacin, and nutrient replenishment to purge stored drug residuals from body tissues.
In October 2004, Ashly boarded a plane to Narconon in Northern California. The program offered a comprehensive approach that combined physical detox, specialized vitamin regimens, body assists, and mental exercises designed to help students work through internal distress.
The results were transformative. After completing the sauna program, Ashly experienced complete physical and mental renewal. Reflecting on the program, she says, “It is literally the only thing that works a hundred percent for every aspect of the person—the physical, the mental, the spiritual.” After graduating, she realized her life was far from over: “I didn’t blow my life. My life was ahead of me.” She has remained completely drug-free since entering Narconon in October 2004.
Discovering Scientology and Finding Purpose
While at Narconon, Ashly used non-religious study tools created by L. Ron Hubbard to restore learning ability and self-determinism. Impressed by the practical value of these materials, she asked her counselors, “Is there a way for me to get more of this?” They told her she could find more information at a Scientology church.
A week after graduating from Narconon, Ashly walked into the Church of Scientology in San Francisco. She was instantly struck by the brightness and positivity of the people she met. Embracing Scientology gave her the tools to understand human behavior, manage life’s challenges, and unlock her capabilities. “Everything that happened in my life that was good was because I was a Scientologist,” Ashly explains. “Anything I did well in the law wasn’t because of my knowledge of the law. It was because I was handling people and circumstances through what I learned in the Church of Scientology”.
Rebuilding a Career and Finding Love
Ashly stayed at Narconon in Northern California for ten years, working as a counselor to help others achieve sobriety. During this time, she worked through the Pennsylvania Bar’s reinstatement process to regain her law license. Recognizing the need for in-house legal support, Narconon engaged her as its registered in-house counsel.
While working at Narconon, she also met her husband, Joe. Bonding over shared values and a commitment to helping others, they married in 2007 and later welcomed their daughter, Fiona.
Launching At Cause Law
In 2019, seeking to be closer to her family and minutes from the main Scientology spiritual center in Clearwater, Florida, Ashly and Joe relocated. Ashly faced the task of restarting her legal career, which required taking the Florida Bar Exam—this time completely sober. She passed.
In May 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Ashly launched At Cause Law from her living room with $10,000. Applying the principles of persistence and responsibility she strengthened through Scientology, she took on her first client. Word of her professionalism spread, and her practice quickly grew into a thriving firm in downtown Clearwater. “The disparity between what I thought was successful and where I am now, it’s ridiculous,” she notes.
Living “At Cause”
Today, Ashly lives by two guiding principles from L. Ron Hubbard that reshaped her mindset: “What’s true is true for you” and “Be able to experience anything.” Facing past hardships without regret allowed her to rise above her history.
Ashly’s journey from a CVS parking lot arrest to becoming a respected attorney and community leader shows that no past mistake defines a person’s future. Her story stands as a beacon of hope for anyone striving to overcome addiction and live life truly “at cause”.
Reflecting on how her journey shaped her purpose, Ashly shares, “I don’t have regrets in life because it got me to where I am now. I feel like that was part of my story, and I would never be doing what I’m doing now if it weren’t for that.”
